Chemically, they are pure cellulose and before the nut matures it possesses a milky liquid in the center. When they become ripe, the nuts fall to the ground and are gathered and dried for eight, up to twelve weeks. After which, they become extremely hard and can be dyed and manipulated into jewelry, home décor items, chess pieces, and so many other items. The nut is non-toxic and the color varies from white to amber. The cellular structure and grain is similar to that of elephant ivory, but is more dense and resilient. It resembles the finest ivory in texture and color and is slightly softer than elephant ivory. The Tagua Nut, commonly known as "vegetable ivory", earned its name from its ivory-like color and texture. With the near extinction of animal ivory, tagua nuts have become a highly valued commodity by artisans and consumers alike. Its' similarity to elephant ivory has been known by craftsman for years and with it being so much like elephant ivory, some pieces that are made from it have been recorded to have been sold at the same price as elephant ivory and in some cases, more. Tagua offers a moral alternative to ivory trading and since it is an "Eco-Friendly" product, the Tagua Nut is a renewable and sustainable product, and helps support the employment of nearly 35,000 people in the rainforests.
